The Benefits of Parkerizing Metal

Parkerizing is a type of metal treatment that can increase the lifespan and durability of your firearm and other steel parts. Parkerizing provides a chemical barrier against rust, moisture, and other corrosive elements. Parkerizing seems to have been developed around the beginning of the 20th century, but was not patented until 1941 by Parker Öhman.

Parkerizing Metal

Parkerizing is a type of chemical conversion coating that creates a passive metal surface. This process involves submerging the metal in an acidic solution while simultaneously contacting it with an electrical current . Parkerizing essentially covers the surface of the firearm so corrosion cannot easily penetrate it . Parkerizing can help protect firearms against the elements while also providing a distinctive salt-and-pepper residue. Parkerizing can be used on iron, steel, aluminum, magnesium, and numerous other materials depending on the Parkerizing process . Parkerizing is often applied to gun parts including but not limited to bolts, levers, hammers, barrels , etc. Parkerized metal has several benefits over other metals and Parkerizing is a cheap and effective way to protect your firearm.

Parkerized metal has several benefits: Parkerized metal may last three times as long as uncoated steel and Parkerizing provides exceptional adhesion against chemicals, water, humidity, saltwater, and more . Parkerizing may be done as a DIY project for anyone who is interested. Parkerizing lowers the coefficient of friction between the Parkerized metal and its environment . Parkerizing can be easily maintained with soap and water, but ideally should not require any kind of lubrication. Parkerized metal also provides a distinctive salt-and-pepper texture that many people enjoy . Parkerizing is often applied to gun parts including bolts, levers, hammers, and other firearm accessories. Parkerizing is often used on firearms to prevent rusting and corrosion. Parkerizing also enhances a firearm’s performance by increasing the coefficient of friction between the Parkerized surface and its environment .

Parkerizing has been around for almost 100 years but remains relevant in today’s society. Parkerizing is a great way to keep your firearm in good condition for years so you can enjoy shooting it for a long time . Parkerized metal also offers several benefits over other types of metals and Parkerizing is a cheap and effective way of protecting your firearms.

My Parkerizing Process: I use a 1 gallon plastic container and fill it with 1 cup of water mixed with 2 tbsp vinegar, submerge the object for 5-10 minutes. Afterward, rinse off the Parkerizing solution and dry with a paper towel. The resulting Parkerizing should be grey-ish/green. Parkerized objects should be oiled before use.

There are several benefits to the parkerizing process of steel and other metals. Be sure to do your proper research before choosing a metal coating shop or performing the process on your own.
